Concept

Building a Workbench is not why you got into woodworking, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a great bench. Our goal is to provide a French style workbench kit that can be fitted and assembled by any woodworker with the most basic selection of tools.

Design

The historic Plate 11 from A.J. Roubo’s “L’Art du menuisier” is the inspiration for our French Bench. We feature the most important aspects of the French design to allow you an easy, fast, and economical alternative to buying or building a custom workbench.

Blank Slate

Our bench is a blank slate – ready to customize with your hardware, whatever you decide that may be. You need a bench that’s your own, with the work holding system that fits the way you work.

Ready To Fit

Wood moves. Every shop is different and a joint that fits perfectly in our shop may be impossibly tight or loose in yours. We cut our mortises true and leave our tenons oversized. The final fitting of each joint should be done just before assembly after a short acclimation period.

Joinery

Our French Bench Kit is joined through the top using a 1-3/4″ x 5″ tenon. This joint can be fine tuned and simply glued in place, it can be slimmed down a bit and wedged on the ends or kerfed and wedged. The final details of assembly are up to you.

Our Plate 11 Bench Kit is joined using the iconic dovetail and tenon joint. While this joint requires a bit more work to fit and assemble, the results are well worth the effort.

The rails on all our benches are joined using bare faced tenons to provide extra strength. This joint can can be fitted and glued like the top or you can drawbore the tenons for extra strength.
